Don Haynes Don Haynes, Band Director

Don Haynes is in his 33rd season as Director of Bands at LBJ High school. The Corpus Christi native attended Del Mar - School of Music for two years and completed his bachelors of music, and masters of instrumental conducting at the University of Texas at Austin. Mr. Haynes was awarded the prestigious statewide "Denius Award" in 1994, presented to Texas' top UIL sponsors. Austin Independent Schools selected Mr. Haynes as the honoree for the African-American Heritage Award (1998). At LBJ, his colleagues have selected him Teacher of the Year four times. He is frequently invited to conduct region bands throughout Texas. Additional conducting appearances include New Mexico, Florida and the all-state band of Louisiana. An active adjudicator for UIL contests, Mr. Haynes is frequently invited by officials across the state in this music capacity. He is a member and former officer of Phi Beta Mu-- International band director fraternity and is presently serving on the Executive Board of Directors for the Texas Bandmasters Association. In 2007 the Austin School Board of Trustees voted to name the beautiful, new 500-seat auditorium at LBJ High School in honor of Mr. Haynes' 32 years of service to the school, and the Austin community. The Don T. Haynes Theater is a stunning structure for the performing arts. It strikes a bold presence on the south end of the LBJ High School campus. Under his leadership, the Jaguar Band awards and accomplishments are numerous. On the international scene, the proud LBJ Marching Band represented the United States in 1996 in the New Year's Day Parade in London. The band would return to London and tour Paris, France in 2000. In the spring of 2007, the band traveled to the Great Wall of China- where its Jazz Band performed. Throughout the historic adventure, the 150-band member group from Texas served as great ambassadors of music in a week long tour of Beijing, China. The band received a special invitation from the Chinese-Cultural International Music Program Committee. Over the past 30 years- Mr. Haynes' LBJ Bands have won many first-place honors at festivals in the areas of marching, jazz and concert contests in Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, California, and Colorado. The LBJ Band consistently wins Division One- sweepstakes honors at UIL marching and concert performances. No resume', however, can capture Mr. Haynes' greatest accomplishment and passion-- teaching and influencing thousands of young people through his love for music, his dedication to excellence, and his commitment to creating a "band family" at LBJ High School, for The One, The Only, LBJ Jaguar Band.
