Stepping Out with the LBJ Band”

Welcome to our New Band Families

A big Jaguar Band welcome to our new families joining the One the Only, LBJ Band. Parents, your 9th grader and your entire family are about to begin an exciting four years of terrific high school experiences. The band has over 30 years of tradition in excellence in performance- including London, Paris, Beijing, Hawaii, New York and many other cities nation wide. I invite you to read the history link about the LBJ Band on our web site: www.LBJBand.com. You will discover that we are a proud group, a fun group, and a hard working group of Austin’s finest young people. I am excited for the opportunity to work closely with each of you (students and parents). This year promises to be packed with fabulous halftime shows, a few fall-competitions, the quest for UIL state marching contest appearance, and on January 1st- we will march at the new year’s day “Sugar Bowl Game” in the New Orleans’ Superdome Stadium. By the way, tt is not too late to sign up for the Sugar Bowl game trip if interested. See the band web site for more information. Freshmen families- get ready for your first great season of stellar academic endeavors, great football games and marching excellence! Again, Welcome to a band program of not only international acclaim, but loads of fun for the entire family.

Hey Band! …. Hey Band!

The freshman boot camp day (June), the two weeks of our colorguard camp, and the two weeks of percussion camp went extremely well! The percussion & guard are ready to ‘rock on’. We have a great group of incoming freshmen and new members, joining forces with a marvelous group of “old men” (a term of endearment for the band’s upperclassmen). The band members are all super excited about the marching season as a Jaguar Band family. We have a solid group of student leaders who are eager to take the 2009- band to new heights. I know the band parents, as well as our football crowd will be leaping with joy this fall when the show is unveiled. The show is “classical” in style. It is titled- “COLD”: The music of Tchaikovsky. The music selections include beautiful excerpts from his ballet “Swan Lake”, “Arabian Dance” from Nutcracker Suite, “Romeo & Juliet”, and Symphony No. 4 (finale movement). Remember parents; you are encouraged to lead the cheering and thunderous applause at every show, and each contest and football game. Don’t be shy when the time comes to “go wild” for your band. We need big numbers in the stands cheering us on, especially at contests! The other bands will surely have their cheering sections as well.

How You can Best Help (parents) your band!

Parents you can best help us enhance your child’s high school band experience 2 (two) very important ways! (1) Become actively involved with the band! Jump in and volunteer to help us with the “little” things and “big” things. So-- JUMP IN and have fun with other band parents; being around your terrific kid and their fellow band buds is a great feeling for the moms and dads of the band. I fully understand that you are busy with many other activities, and responsibilities including work, however, our over all success is directly connected to your involvement. (2) Once school begins, time management becomes absolutely critical. I ask that you encourage and praise systematic horn & colorguard practice at home…. And encourage and praise a systematic approach to their academic work throughout the year. Course work, studies, and marching band in the fall can be a smashing success- enriching the lives of our kids IF good habits and good time management is implemented from the beginning of the year. Our attitude with the Jaguar Marching Band is - academics first, and the band comes right behind their studies.

Meet Your Band Directors

Your student (the band) is in great hands. I believe you will agree that we are fortunate to have a solid team of experts working with each department of the LBJ Band program. I invite you to visit the staff page for more details.

First Big Band Event (2009) - LBJ Band to Play at the new Superintendent’s Convocation:

Date: August 18 (Tue). The LBJ marching band will head to the Texas Heritage Center at the invitation of our new AISD Superintendent to play the afternoon session of her “Teacher’s Convocation”. School buses will be provided to transport the band. A specific time block for that event will be published next week, once I get more details.

KEYE TV - Marching Band Challenge:

Once again, Channel 42 (KEYE-TV) is sponsoring the “Marching Band Challenge” in the central Texas area. They structure a drumline competition comprised of 16 central Texas marching drumlines. The public votes for a winner of each group of four. The four winners then go against each other at the end of August (the finals).

KEYE creates a web site for viewers to vote for their favorite band drumline. Last year LBJ won it’s heat, and finished 2nd in the overall finals. It was great fun rallying support from everyone in the LBJ Band family- friends and relatives throughout the country were encouraged to vote for the Jaguar drumline. This year, each band will have it’s very own web-page designed by KEYE for voters to go to and vote. A new feature included with this approach is an opportunity for businesses to advertise on the respective page. We will announce the LBJ date for the competition, and announce the web site where one may go to VOTE for the Jaguar Drumline. More info on that event coming soon.
