Winterguard 2008

Congratulations to Winterguard 2008, placing 3rd at the State Championships!

What is a Colorguard Section?

The high energy, visual impact section for The One, The Only, Jaguar Marching Band is the Colorguard. Often called the "flag section" by non-band fans, the colorguard team for marching bands accentuates the musical movements throughout the show. Coreographed movements ranging from fast spins and tosses to accentuate the beautiful designs in the fabric of the flags, to the precise handling of the white-wooden show rifles brighten up the marching field and focus the judge's attention on key parts of the marching band's performance.  The colorguard staff work closely with the marching band director and drum majors to coordinate and carefully chart their synchronized movements throughout the halftime show or contest. The LBJ Band's 2008 Colorguard section was 19 members strong! The UIL judges praised their stunning performances while anxiously awaiting the 2008-2009 year when a more seasoned group will take the field.

How do I join the Colorguard?

The LBJ Colorguard candidates (members) enter a training session during the spring weeks of April and May in preparation for auditions in May.  The 2008-2009 Colorguard team for next year's marching band will be finalized by the end of May. Summer colorguard camp and band camp is required to learn the intricate movements.  See calendar dates in the colorguard section of this website and in the CHARMS calendar.  Incoming 9th graders looking for an exciting, friendly, hard working group to join are encouraged to check out the LBJ colorguard. PE credit is awarded for fall-semester participation in the guard. For more information, please contact the Colorguard Director, Mr. Fernando Hernandez or call the band office at 414-7032.  Students who are presently enrolled in grades 9-11 at LBJ/LASA High are encouraged to check us out.  Don't be concerned if you have never done Colorguard before, the guard instructors will teach you all the Colorguard fundamentals prior to auditions. We promise you will have a great time and never forget your experiences as a member of the LBJ Colorguard.

What is Winterguard?

During the football season the very active LBJ marching band performs on the field at football games and competes at several marching contests. Once the football season ends in November or December, the Colorguard team and the directors begin to make a transition to perform indoors. An exciting 5-minute show on the gymnasium floor is the stage for Winterguard performances. The music for the performance is pre-recorded and piped through large speakers. The entire activity is very exciting, very competitive, and most of all very rewarding. You may view one of our past performances on YouTube to see what "Winterguard" is all about. The LBJ guard once used the winterguard name "Static Motion", a nickname our state champions of 1986 adopted in 1985. Click here to see LBJ's 2004 "Static Motion" performance. The Winterguard dropped the name "Static Motion" in 2005 and now goes by the name, "The LBJ Winterguard". The 2008 LBJ Winterguard has 11 members.
